The Port Mahon River Lighthouse (photo taken in the early 80s) is featured in my debut speculative fiction gothic novel coming March 2022. The Mahon River Lighthouse [No. 5], also called the Mahon Ditch Lighthouse, was built to safely guide commercial oystermen and fishing schooners to the Delaware shore. The lighthouse was moved inland and upriver twice and rebuilt four times before finally being abandoned at this location long before my youth.
In December 1984, the Port Mahon River Lighthouse was destroyed by fire. The cause or culprit remains a mystery. Although lost, this lighthouse is not forgotten, and its 16 screw-pile foundation pillars remain stuck in the mud offshore on Port Mahon Road.
The white building haunting the background of the lighthouse is the Port Mahon Oyster Shucking House. It is also featured in The Stealing gothic. The foundation and rubble of the old shucking house is still there. This is one of the few images of the old shucking house in existence.
